That there is the Tata Nano, the spiritual successor to the original Volkswagen Beetle. With manual steering, a sub-one-liter engine and wheels the size of dinner plates, the “People’s Car” from India was designed not for aggresive performance, but for aggressive economy.

How aggressive? The Nano gets 50 miles to the gallon and will retail for roughly $2,500–the same price as the DVD player option on a new Lexus, as one reviewer drolly noted.

While the diminutive car will most likely not meet U.S. and European safety standards, it wasn’t designed to compete with cars in those markets; One of the main catalysts behind the creation of the nano was that the owner of tata was tired of seeing entire families holding on for dear life on mopeds. This gives them a wonderful all weather alternative. Tata expects an annual demand of one million cars. As the so-called “other half” gains access to automobiles, what will be the impact on the transportation design field?

Indian beat Pakistan at the 20 – 20 worldcup …. what a red letter day in Indian sports history … An amazing match .. I though enjoyed the match in office .. amongst all my hooting colleages and samosas and beer … But today was even more eventful … Team India arrived in the city .. and in true Mumbai city fashion .. its people were out there to welcome them with arms wide open . The sites from the auto rickshaw were amazing .. people standing in the rain for hours , holding out Indian flags chanting out ” Chak de India ” , althought I didn’t manage to get a good view of the team .as I was stuck between a bus and a huge truck … My office staff happen to get amazing shorts of the entire entourage of the players . From Sahar all the way to Worli it was like a live coverage of the entire event … here’s some amazing videos and photographs taken by outstanding budding photographers from my office .

Well promised to give you live updates .. but no laptop …. tragedy .. yup for sure … but anyways all the action from designyatra .. not all at once but in snippets for sure !… for starters Wally Olins .. I have always loved Wally olins … he is a brand himself .. I always .. seem to parallely place him next to Gandhi , with his pecular glasses and a look that you can never miss .. straight out of an Agathy Christy’s novel

wally-image-low-resolution2.jpg

Wally Olins was the opening speaker at the designyatra and for sure what an opening session it was … From his bid to brand India …. his astounding research on Indian brands , His querks about the 2012 Olympic’s logo .. The man meant business … Sarcastic humour  seem to have slipped out of Neville Brody’s mouth about Wally’s bluntness and his bid to brand India…… On the whole Wally has always been one designer whom I admire  alot and he lived up to his Bristish best…

Just a few days left for the Designyatra to commence … Although I am travelling to Goa on a shoe string budget … but alls well I mite just come face to face with the master..Stephan Sagmeister . I will be blogging about the event ,updating minute by minute happenings of the entire seminar. The excitement has set in ..all the action … and enlightenment of Designyatra 07 as it happens …

But despite all the excitement .. there’s some bad news , Two of the eminent speakers won’t be able to make it ,  but Piyush Pandey is going make his presence felt .. If that is something all we design lovers will enjoy … we’ll have to wait and watch. Watch out for our video blog of the entire event …

Today I was off work .. had a terrible head ache … and whilst my trembling headache .. I came across Spencer Tunicks new project … Its photo shoot done in order to raise awareness for global warming , Greenpeace and the photographer Spencer Tunick got hundreds of naked people to pose for photos on a melting glacier.

600 hundred people across Europe who were concerned  regarding the environment particpated in this mamoth of a project.

Personally I just think that Global warming has become a rather commercial topic .. everyone wants to do their on bit .. which in one way is a good thing .. but aren’t we going a bit too far … will a project involving 600 naked people and a glacier really raise a brow towards the more alarming issues about global warming …

These days Prada isn’t just a name in fashion. The venerable Italian fashion house has its elegant fingers in several other pies including mobile phones and staging mammoth events.

Image

In May the label hosted one of the parties of the year in the city of Valencia in Spain to celebrate the America’s Cup. As principal sponsors of one of the participating yachts, Luna Rossa, Prada spared no expense at its lavish VIP do held at the Central Market which is normally home to a buzzing produce market.

The event attracted a slew of local and international celebrities who lapped up the unique ambience – organizers left a lot of the stalls intact including fruit stalls and delis, and guests were invited to sample the produce on offer. One deli housed the event’s DJ, who mixed tunes amid the Parma ham and anchovy tins, while other stalls where converted into mini showcases of Prada accessories; with belts and bags hanging from hooks as if they were pieces of fruit. In one deli stall Prada even displayed its silk turban range.
